RUSSIAN RADAR BASE IN GABALA IS CLOSED
After Russia began to remove its military and instruments
from Azerbaijan, the Russian radar base in Gabala which is an
important part of the Russian air defense system is closed. It is
stated that the reason of the closure of the base is Azerbaijan’s
demand for increasing the annual rent from $7 million to $300
million. With the agreement signed between the parties in
2000, the station was hired by Russia for 10 years. Gabala Radar
Station hosts about 1400 Russian soldiers and it is capable
of tracking the entire Middle East region as far as India. About
the closure of the base, Russian Deputy Minister of Defense
Anton Antonov said, “If we had any doubts that the closure
of the Gabala Radar Station would weaken Russian defense,
we would have reached a compromise with Azerbaijan on the
extension of the agreement.”
