Business Upsurge Noted
In Springfield Houses
SPRINGFIELD, ILL.—Theatre business in
Springfield for the first eight months of
1955 indicates that it is at its highest standing
in five years, according to a survey made
recently by the Illinois State Joiu-nal-
Register.
Wayne Allen, staff writer for the paper,
said in a recent article that where August
ordinarily is the worst month at local theatres,
"this year ranked as much as 25 per
cent above boxoffice figures of the same
periods from 1950-1954."
The article continued:
"The local August upturn in attendance
made the month compare favorably with
June and July, other doldrum months, despite
competition from the Illinois State Fair and
the pre-Labor Day weekend American Legion
convention, not to mention that ever present
takeaway threat by television.
"Credit for the surprising strength of
August in the over-all attendance survey is
given to top product by local theatre managers.
'Mister Roberts,' a three-week spectacular
at the Roxy; 'Love Is a Many-
Splendored Thing.' a two-week grosser at the
Fox-Lincoln: 'Summertime,' a Senate hit,
and 'You're Never Too Young' at the
Orpheum w-ere responsible . .
.
"The forecast for fall and winter business
at the four downtown first run theatres is
for a continued rise in 1955 turnstile figures.
Like exhibitors over the country, local theatre
managers are banking on public interest in
several new screen processes to offset television's
elaborate lineup of 'spectaculars.' "
