name known on virtually every single continent. We have often felt that nitriding is quite possibly the fastest growing segment of the industry. We at "The Monty" recently met up with Chris Morawski, President of the commercial heat treating arm of the company and he very kindly gave us the history of the company and a tour of their location in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. April 26/2013 1984 Chris Morawski and Michel Korwin along with other investors start Nitrex Metal Inc., in Montreal. At the time Chris is working full time at Pratt & Whitney outside of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Originally the company was offering nitriding services and building their own furnaces. The partners felt that nitriding was a technology which had enormous potential but was not well recognized. >From this staring point the company offered two things very unique at the time; control of the process using nitriding potential and control of the process using a standard PC, something unheard of at the time. Late 1980’s the company starting marketing the technology with the first customer being COLMEGNA in Italy and the second being H & S Heat Treating in Port Robinson, Ontario, Canada. H & S started with two furnaces bought from Nitrex under the name Nitrex Metal Technologies Inc., in Burlington, Ontario with H & S and Nitrex being equal partners in Nitrex Metal Technologies. 1993 the technology was gaining acceptance and significant growth resulted from all around the world including England, France, New Zealand and Australia. 1995 a brand new Nitrex Metal Technologies' plant was built in Mason, Michigan with 2 Nitriding furnaces and Chris moved to Michigan to start the facility and ending up staying for 10 years. 1998 Nitrex Metal Technologies in Burlington became 100% owned by H & S Heat Treating and the Montreal and Mason, MI plants became 100% part of Nitrex Metal Inc. It should be stressed that this was a very amicable separation and that the two companies to this day enjoy a very close relationship. 2000 Nitrex Metal Inc. acquires a commercial heat treat in Aurora, IL which is renamed Nitrex Inc. 2002 Nitrex Metal Inc., acquires Alloy Hard Surfacing in San Jose, CA and the name is changed to Nitrex Inc. www.themonty.com 2002 The company builds a new plant in Franklin, IN. 2007 Nitrex Inc., in Las Vegas, NV is opened bringing the total to 5 plants in the US #1 in Canada and 1 in San Paulo..
While the company was built on Gas Nitriding it also offers significant amounts of Vacuum, Vacuum Carburizing, Plasma and Endothermic Carburizing capacity (it is worth noting that the Vacuum Carburizing portion of the business will be expanding). The ownership structure to this day remains the same with Michel and Chris the majority owners although each plant operates independently. Future plans and current plans are quite impressive with the company slated to open two new plants by the end of 2013. In addition 12,000 square feet was added to the Indiana facility which will house 2 new gas nitriders to start. Not to be outdone but the Chicago location has added a 12,000 square foot building which will have a 25,000 pound capacity gas nitrider with working dimensions of 1.6 meters X 4 ½ meters deep (i.e. 63" x 177"). And for some trivia the largest gas nitrider the company has is in Mason, MI with working dimensions of 2 ½ meters X 5 meters X 2 ½ meters which can be seen in the photo below.
