"Firefighters quickly extinguish a fire that broke out in a Milwaukie building slated for demolition to make way for the MAX Orange Line. Clackamas Fire District 1 Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire Tuesday in a Milwaukie building that will be torn down to make way for the Portland-Milwaukie light rail project. TriMet now owns the building that formerly housed Beaver Heat Treating Corp., 2505 S.E. Moores St., where contractors were salvaging parts of the air conditioning system, said TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt. "It appears that sparks from a cutting torch set the fire," Altstadt said. Contractors in the building were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. Brandon Paxton, Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman, said the fire was reported at 2:11 p.m. A total of 10 pieces of firefighting apparatus responded. Beaver Heat Treating is a second-generation family business that operated on the same site since 1955, counting the Ford Motor Co. and the U.S. military among its customers. At one point, the company ran 26 furnaces in the 32,000-square-foot building. TriMet relocated the business when the MAX Orange Line light rail route was selected".
