Potsdam Municipal Airport - Master Plan – Phase 1 Report
TAXIWAYS
The taxiway system at the Airport consists of four taxiways. Edge lighting on
taxiways is medium intensity taxiway lighting (MITL). Table 2-4 describes the
taxiways and their characteristics.
SAFETY AREAS AND OBJECT FREE AREAS
Runways and taxiways are surrounded by rectangular areas known as “safety areas”
(also shown on Figure 2-5). These areas have slopes ranging from 1% to 5% and
should be graded and free of obstructions to enhance the safety of airplanes that
undershoot, overrun, or veer off a runway or taxiway. The purpose of the safety areas
is to minimize the probability of serious damage to airplanes accidentally entering the
area, and to provide greater accessibility for fire fighting and rescue equipment during
such incidents. The applicable runway safety areas for Runway 6-24 are 150 feet
wide centered on the runway and extend for 300 feet beyond each runway end. The
applicable taxiway safety areas are 79 feet wide and centered on the taxiway. The
safety areas for Runway 6-24 and its associated taxiways are free from obstructions
and meet the FAA standards for grades and drainage.
Areas known as Object Free Areas (OFAs) also surround runways and taxiways.
These areas require clearing of objects except for any object whose location is fixed
by function. The purpose of the OFAs is to provide safe and efficient operations at the
Airport. The OFA for Runway 6-24 is 500 feet in width and extends 300 feet beyond
each runway end. The taxiway OFA is 131 feet in width and extends the length of the
taxiway. All of these OFAs are appropriately clear and meet FAA standards.
