Potsdam Municipal Airport - Master Plan – Phase 1 Report
Runway landing length was examined by using published information from the
manufacturer, Embraer. Because the actual runway length calculation tables were not
provided, the requirements are based on an airport elevation at sea level, maximum
landing weight, and standard atmospheric conditions. The runway landing length
requirements and deficiencies for Potsdam Municipal Airport are shown in Table 4-6.
TABLE 4-6
RUNWAY LANDING LENGTH REQUIREMENTS SUMMARY
Method Runway Length Requirements Deficiencies
Embraer Bandeirante Published Data 3,773 -68’
Source: Embraer, 2009
According to all of these calculations, the runway is deficient to accommodate the
Bandeirante. Because the main issue of runway length is with landing, the runway is
currently 68 feet short based on the published data. To accommodate this aircraft at
an elevation of 474 feet, it is recommended that the runway be extended by 100 feet,
to a length of 3,805. It is important to note, however, that further extensions may be
needed to accommodate the Bandeirante if it were to be fully loaded during takeoff
operations.
4.02-4 Runway Width Analysis
Runway width is a dimensional standard that is based upon the physical
characteristics of aircraft using the Airport. The physical characteristic of importance
is wingspan. FAA Airplane Design Group II (wingspans up to but not including 79
feet) is used for defining airport dimensional standards. FAA AC 150/5300-13
specifies a runway width of 75 feet. The runway at Potsdam Municipal Airport is 60
feet wide and does not meet the design standard.
4.02-5 Pavement Strength
The existing pavement strength of Runway 6-24, the primary runway at Potsdam
Municipal Airport, is 30,000 pounds for single wheel landing gear. The pavement
design is based on an analysis of the various types of aircraft expected to use the
Airport and the anticipated numbers of departures for each aircraft over a 20-year
period. (In the design process, this data is converted to Equivalent Annual Departures
by the critical aircraft in order to design a pavement section suitable for a 20-year
pavement life.)
There are five B-II aircraft that are the most demanding for pavement strength, based
on this analysis of existing and anticipated annual departures. The pavement strength
of Runway 6-24 is sufficient to meet the needs of these aircraft.
