Potsdam Municipal Airport - Master Plan – Phase 1 Report
4.02-6 Taxiway System
The taxiway system for Potsdam Municipal Airport should complement the runway
system by providing safe access to and from runway and landside areas. At present,
the runway has a full parallel taxiway (Taxiway A) on the northwestern side of the
runway connecting with the general aviation apron area. Taxiway B connects the
runway to Taxiway A and the GA apron. Taxiway C connects Taxiway A to the
runway and also to the abandoned apron. Taxiway E connects the runway to the old
hangars.
In terms of taxiway design, based on FAA Advisory Circular 150/5300-13 standards,
the taxiway system should be designed to a minimum width of 35 feet at a separation
of 240 feet from runway centerline and should have the same strength as the runway
system. Currently, all taxiways are 25 feet wide and do not comply with this design
standard which requires taxiways to be 35 feet wide. The taxiway system is in good
condition.
4.02-7 Instrumentation and Lighting
Current airfield lighting is sufficient for the entire planning period. According to the
pilot survey and conversations with UPS contractor AirNow, there is a need for
additional instrument approaches at the Airport. Currently, the only approaches
available are to Runway 24 and no approaches to Runway 6. The pilot for AirNow
explained that this results in additional flight time for him and other pilots coming
from the west; they have to circle the Airport to land heading west in order to fly the
approaches into the Airport. The pilot for AirNow specifically recommended a GPS
or LPV approach. According to the FAA, the Airport is scheduled for feasibility
studies for LPV approaches in Fiscal Year (FY) 2010. It is recommended that, at the
least, a GPS approach be added to Runway 6.
4.03 Landside Requirements
The planning of landside facilities should be based upon a balance of airside and
landside capacity. The determination for terminal and support area facilities has been
accomplished for the three future planning periods. The principal operating elements
covered under these analyses for general aviation requirements include:
• Based and Itinerant Aircraft Parking Aprons
• Aircraft Storage Facilities
• Automobile Parking.
• Support Area Requirements
