Potsdam Municipal Airport - Master Plan – Phase 1 Report
Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI)
PAPIs are used to provide visual glide slope guidance for non-precision or visual
approaches. The PAPI system is composed of two lights that are installed in a line
perpendicular and to the left of the runway. When an aircraft is on the correct glide
slope angle, the PAPIs will emit one white and one red light. Other light
combinations can indicate when an aircraft is too high (two white) and too low (two
red). The PAPI system for Runway 6-24 is currently in excellent condition and the
locations are designated with the letter “P” on Figure 2-10.
Rotating Beacon
The location of an airport at night is universally indicated by a rotating beacon that
projects two beams of light, one white and one green, 180 degrees apart. The beams
of white and green light indicate that the airport is a lighted civil land airport. The
Airport has a rotating beacon that is in excellent condition. It is located adjacent to the
electrical building and is depicted as a star on Figure 2-10.
