Potsdam Municipal Airport - Master Plan – Phase 1 Report
4.03-1 Based Aircraft Parking Apron
The based aircraft parking area is planned to ensure adequate tie-down space for
those based aircraft that do not require hangar storage. Due to persistent poor winter
weather conditions in the region, tie-downs for based aircraft are not a popular option
among aircraft owners. Three out of the five currently tied-down based aircraft are
only at the Airport seasonally, which is mainly during the summer months. There are
currently 13 tie-down spaces for general aviation aircraft on the combined based and
itinerant apron that is approximately 39,196 square yards. Due to the low demand for
based aircraft tie-downs at the Airport, additional tie-downs are not recommended
during the planning period.
4.03-2 Itinerant Aircraft Parking Apron
Areas designated for the parking of transient (visiting) aircraft are called “itinerant
aprons.” The itinerant apron areas are also used by based aircraft for loading, fuel,
and other activities. The size of such an apron required to meet itinerant demand was
estimated using the following methodology:
• Calculate the average daily itinerant operations for the most active month.
• Assume the average busy itinerant day is ten percent more active than the
average day of the peak month.
• Assume that a certain portion of the itinerant airplanes will be on the apron
during the busy day (FAA AC 150/5300-13 uses 50 percent). Since 50 percent
of the itinerant operations are departures, only 25 percent of the daily itinerant
operations will represent aircraft on the ground in need of parking area.
• Calculate the apron needed using 400 square yards per itinerant aircraft.
Applying this approach to the general aviation operations forecast yields the
demand for apron area shown in Table 4-7.
