Potsdam Municipal Airport - Master Plan – Phase 1 Report
2.02-4 Airspace Activity
Airspace activity in the Potsdam Terminal Area includes general aviation and military
activity.
GENERAL AVIATION ACTIVITY
According to discussions with the Potsdam Village Administrator, general aviation
accounts for approximately 99 percent of the total annual operations at the Airport.
General aviation activity comprises everything from charter flights to business
aviation to flight training. Although most general aviation aircraft are equipped with
equipment to fly IFR, and many general aviation pilots are trained to fly IFR, a high
percentage of general aviation flight activity operates under VFR. VFR traffic is not
generally controlled by an air traffic control facility, meaning the pilot is responsible
for maintaining adequate separation from other traffic and terrain. VFR traffic
generally uses prominent land features for navigation, especially in uncontrolled
airspace. Ingress and egress routes with easily distinguishable land features around
the Airport include New York State 11B running east and west, the Village of
Potsdam to the west, and New York State Route 11 running northeast from the
Village of Potsdam.
MILITARY ACTIVITY
The Potsdam Village Administrator also noted that military activity at Potsdam
Municipal Airport accounts for approximately one percent of the total annual
operations at the Airport. The military operations are various touch-and-go and
training operations. The nearest military base is Fort Drum, which is approximately
60 miles southwest of the Airport. Fort Drum Blackhawk helicopters average
approximately two training operations per month at Potsdam.
2.03 Historical Aviation Activity
The following sections provide baseline information that will be used later in this
study in the preparation of aviation activity forecasts and identification of facility
requirements for the 20-year planning period (through 2029) for the Airport.
2.03-1 Annual Operations
Table 2-7 shows a detailed breakdown of annual operations for the years 2005
through 2008 at Potsdam Municipal Airport, as reported by the FAA Terminal Area
Forecast (TAF).
