62 Dy. Executive Engineer<br />

The Contractor is advised to provide water storage tank of adequate capacity to take care of<br />

possible shutdown of water supply system.<br />

The Contractor shall have to supply water required by the Department for its establishment at<br />

work site. The water consumed by the Department will be metreed. For providing the metre<br />

permission, if necessary will be arranged by the Department. Charges for the water<br />

consumed by the Department will be paid to the Contractor at the rates of 125% of the<br />

recurring costs or actually charged to him by concerned authorities and no other charges<br />

would be payable by the Department.<br />

7.6 ELECTRICITY :<br />

The Contractor will have to make his own arrangement at his own cost for obtaining or<br />

providing electric supply at work site.<br />

Electrical supply for the Departments use at work site shall be provided by the contractor. <strong>No</strong><br />

charges would be payable by the Department.<br />

8. SAFETY MEASURES AND AMENITIES :<br />

8.1 SAFETY MEASURES :<br />

The Contractor shall take all necessary precautions for the safety of the workers and<br />

preserving their health while working on such job as require special protection and<br />

precautions wherever required. The following are some of the requirements listed, through not<br />

exhaustive. The contractor shall also comply with the directions issued by the Engineer in this<br />

behalf from time to time and at all times.<br />

Providing protective foot-wear to workers, in situations like mixing and placing of mortar or<br />

concrete, in quarries and place where the work is to be done under too much wet conditions<br />

as also for movements over surfaces infected with oyster growth etc.<br />

Providing protective head wear to workers, working in quarries etc. to protect them against<br />

accidental fall of materials from above.<br />

Taking such normal precautions like providing hand rails to the edges of the floating platform<br />

or barges, not allowing nails or metal parts or useless timber to spread around etc.<br />

8.2 AMENITIES :<br />

(I) Supporting workmen with proper belts, ropes etc. when working on any masts, cranes, grabs,<br />

hoist, dredger etc.<br />

Taking necessary steps towards training the workers concerned of the use of machinery<br />

before they are allowed to handle it independently and taking all necessary precautions in and<br />

around the areas where machines, hoists and similar units are working.<br />

Avoiding bare live-wires etc. as would electrocute workers.<br />

Making all platforms, stagings and temporary structures sufficiently strong and not causing<br />

the workmen and supervisory staff to take undue risks.<br />

Providing sufficient first aid trained staff and equipment to be available quickly at the work site<br />

to render immediate first aid treatment in case of accidents due to suffocation, drowning and<br />

other injuries.<br />

Providing full length gum boots, leather hand gloves, leather jackets with fireproof aprons to<br />

cover the chest and black reaching upto knees plain goggles for the eyes to the labour<br />

working with hot asphalt handling vibrators in cement concrete and also where use of any or<br />

all these items is, essential in the interest of health and well being of the labourers in the<br />

opinion of the Engineer.<br />
