Super Cheap Sleeps<br />

The Kings Cross area has plenty of backpacker hostels to choose <strong>from</strong>—<br />

and most of them have double rooms, so, if you are traveling as a couple,<br />

you can lock yourself away <strong>from</strong> the crowd. You’ll find most have<br />

discount rates if you stay for a week (normally a night free). While it’s<br />

true that 20-somethings dominate, older adventurous travelers also<br />

make use of the cheap facilities. Most hostels are just off the main drag,<br />

called Darlinghurst Road. Here are three of the best. The V Backpackers,<br />

owned and operated, very friendly and popular. Has a good rooftop<br />

Sullivans Hotel About half of this boutique hotel’s guests come <strong>from</strong> overseas,<br />

mainly <strong>from</strong> the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. There’s<br />

also a small corporate following. Sullivans is right in the heart of the action in<br />

one of Sydney’s most popular shopping, entertainment, restaurant, and gay pub<br />

and club areas. The hotel is particularly popular with Americans during the Gay<br />

and Lesbian Mardi Gras, held over the month of February. Rooms are cozy, with<br />

queen-size beds and a refrigerator; and all have a bathroom with a shower (no<br />

tub). There’s a pleasant garden courtyard.<br />

Wattle Private Hotel This attractive Edwardian-style house built between<br />

1900 and 1910 offers homey accommodations in the increasingly fashionable<br />

inner-city suburb of Darlinghurst, known for its great cafes, nightlife, and restaurants.<br />

Rooms are found on four stories, but there’s no elevator, so if you don’t fancy<br />

too many stairs try to get a room on the lower floor. Rooms are smallish but are
