prices, then this is your place. Leather jackets for men and women go for<br />

between A$199 and A$899 (US$129–US$584), with an average price of<br />

Carla Zampatti There are some 30 Carla Zampatti stores around <strong>Australia</strong><br />

offering stylish fashions at hard-to-swallow prices. Open Monday through Saturday<br />

Dorian Scott Probably the best place to go for hand-knit sweaters—called<br />

“jumpers” in <strong>Australia</strong>—Dorian Scott has a wide range of colorful garments <strong>from</strong><br />

more than 200 leading <strong>Australia</strong>n designers. While some items go for A$80<br />

(US$52), others will set you back several hundred. You’ll also find clothing accessories<br />

for men, women, and children in this two-story emporium, including Hot<br />

Tuna surfware and Thomas Cook adventure clothing. Open Monday through Saturday<br />

<strong>from</strong> 9:30am to 7pm and Sunday <strong>from</strong> 10am to 6pm. There are also two<br />

Dorian Scott stores at Sydney International Airport (& 02/9667 3255) and<br />

FOOD<br />

The goodies you’ll find in the downstairs food section of David Jones department<br />

store on Castlereagh Street (the men’s section) are enough to tempt anyone.<br />

The store sells the best local and imported products to the rich and<br />

famous.<br />

Coles One of the few supermarkets in the city center, this place is a good bet<br />

if you want to cater for yourself or are after ready-made food (including tasty<br />

sandwiches) and cheap soft drinks. There’s another Coles beneath the giant<br />

Coca-Cola sign on Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross. Open daily <strong>from</strong> 6am to<br />

midnight. Wynyard station, Castlereagh St., Wynyard (directly opposite the Menzies Hotel and<br />

Darrell Lea Chocolates This is the oldest location of <strong>Australia</strong>’s most<br />

famous chocolate shop. Pick up some wonderful handmade chocolates as well as<br />

other unusual candies, including the best licorice this side of the Kasbah. At the<br />

corner of King and George sts. & 02/9232 2899.<br />

Sydney Fishmarket Finding out about what people eat can be a good introduction<br />

to a new country, and, in my opinion, nowhere is this more fascinating<br />

than a visit to the local fish market. Here you’ll find seven major fish retailers selling<br />

everything <strong>from</strong> shark to Balmain bugs (a kind of squat crayfish), with hundreds<br />

of species in between. Watch out for the local pelicans being fed the fishy<br />

leftovers. There’s also a sushi bar, a couple of cheap seafood eateries, a fruit market,<br />

and a good deli. The retail sections are open daily <strong>from</strong> 7am to 4pm. Get
