at a decent price are what you’ll find at this good, semibudget option. All<br />

reception is on the premises (though the management is only a phone call and<br />

IN FITZROY<br />

The Nunnery Value This former convent is an exceptionally good budget<br />

accommodation. Set in a terrace on the city’s edge, the Nunnery is perfectly situated<br />

near the restaurant and nightlife scenes on Brunswick Street and Lygon<br />

Street, in nearby Carlton. Rooms vary in size <strong>from</strong> three-bed dorms to 12-bed<br />

rooms in former nuns’ cells. Twin rooms come with either two singles or a set of<br />

bunks. All have basic furnishings and share bathrooms. Some second-floor<br />

rooms have good views over the neighboring Royal Exhibition Buildings and the<br />

city skyline. There’s a large guest kitchen, a small courtyard where you can eat<br />

breakfast, Internet access, and a large sitting room filled with couches, a fireplace,<br />

and a TV. A new boutique wing, The Nunnery Guesthouse, has two doubles<br />

for A$85 (US$55), five family rooms, and a single for A$65 (US$42). These<br />

rooms are nicer than those in the main section but still have shared facilities.<br />

IN ST. KILDA<br />

Hotel <strong>To</strong>larno The quirky Hotel <strong>To</strong>larno is right in the middle of St. Kilda’s<br />

cafe and restaurant strip, and a long stone’s throw away <strong>from</strong> the beach. Rich red<br />

carpets bedeck the corridors throughout this 1950s-to-1960s retro-style building.<br />

Rooms vary, but all are modern and nice. The most popular rooms are in the<br />

front of the building and have balconies overlooking the main street. The more<br />

expensive of those come with a separate kitchen and lounge. Suites vary <strong>from</strong> one<br />

and two bedroom and don’t have balconies, though some have Jacuzzis.<br />
