9.8.2 PIPE BODY TESTS
9.8.2.1 For all grades, the required minimum average (set of three specimens) absorbed energy
for each heat based on full size specimens shall be 20 ft-lb (27 J) for transverse
specimens. The Table-8 stands modified accordingly.
9.8.2.2 For pipe of all grades and specified wall thickness, the Charpy V-notch Impact Test for
determination of Shear Area in accordance with clause G.3.1 of Annex G of this
specification shall be performed.
9.8.2.3 This clause stands deleted.
9.8.3 Pipe weld and HAZ tests:
Clause G.12 of Annex-G shall also complied with.
9.9 DWT TEST FOR PSL2 WELDED PIPE
9.9.1 Whenever line pipes are specified for hydrocarbon service in gaseous phase and
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) service in Purchase Order, Drop Weight Tear Test in
accordance with clause G.3.2 of Annex G of API 5L modified in this specification shall
also be performed for all pipe size, grade and wall thickness.
RESIDUAL STRESS TEST
Helical pipes shall meet the testing and minimum acceptance criteria set forth in this
paragraph. The residual stress test shall be carried out on the pipe after hydrostatic test.
The increase in circumference, if any, after severing shall be measured using fiducial
marks of known separation on the specimen prior to severing. The residual stress then
shall be calculated using following formula.
S = {(E * t * C) / (12.556 * R 2 )} – {(F * R 2 ) / t}
Where:
S - Residual Stress, kPa (psi)
C - Increase in circumference, mm (in)
t - Specified wall thickness, mm (in)
E - Young’s Modulus of Elasticity, 2 x 108 kPa, (29 x 106 psi)
R - Pipe Radius, mm (0.5 * Specified outside diameter), mm (in)
F - 0.1154 in SI units, (0.425 in conventional units)
The computed residual stress shall not exceed 10% of the Specified Minimum Yield
Stress (SMYS) of the pipe. If any specimen fails to meet this requirements, the pipe may
be retested once. The retest specimen shall be obtained from the same end of the pipe
from where the failed specimen was obtained. If the results obtained from the retest
specimen are acceptable, normal test schedule shall be resumed. If the results obtained
from retest specimen are not acceptable, the pipe shall be rejected and testing shall
resume on the next pipe in the production line. If this test also fails all pipes back to the
last acceptable test shall be individually tested and those pipe which pass the test shall
