Lab 7.3: D<strong>is</strong>playing profile-based content<br />

During th<strong>is</strong> lab you will learn how to d<strong>is</strong>play profile-based content in a menu. You will also learn how to<br />

create a taxonomy, how to create categories, how to use an option selection element, and how to profile<br />

content items.<br />

Time needed<br />

It will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete th<strong>is</strong> lesson.<br />

Lesson 7.3.1: Taxonomies and categories<br />

A taxonomy <strong>is</strong> simply a classification system. Categories are grouped into taxonomies. Taxonomies are<br />

hierarchical and are built in a way similar to building a site framework. Unlike a site framework, you do<br />

not define the order in which sibling categories are saved. <strong>The</strong>y are simply d<strong>is</strong>played in alphabetical<br />

order.<br />

Categories are used to associate similar content and to describe the type of content. Individual pieces of<br />

content can be categorized, or a category can be associated with a specific authoring template so that all<br />

content created with that template has the specified category. <strong>Content</strong> can be profiled with one or more<br />

categories. Remember that taxonomies cannot be used for profiling, so consider th<strong>is</strong> when planning your<br />

website.<br />

When building a hierarchy of taxonomies and categories, it <strong>is</strong> important to consider how a menu will use<br />

your categories in a search. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> because menus search both upwards and downwards within groups<br />

of categories. For example, suppose you use the following taxonomy:<br />

v Financial<br />

– Banking Solutions<br />

– Interest Rates<br />

- Personal<br />

- Business<br />

- Corporate<br />

v News<br />
