Colony’s first Rebellion and Asylum
Castle Hill Heritage Park, end of Heritage Park Drive
Castle Hill Government Farm opened in 1801 and a stone
barracks was built by 1804 to house the mainly Irish convicts.
The Irish rebelled on 4 March 1804 and on 5 March took part
in the Battle of Vinegar Hill. This was the first use of martial
law in the Colony. After the convicts left in 1811 the barracks
became the first asylum in the Colony. A re-enactment of the
rebellion will occur. Food and drinks available for sale.
