Convict Women’s Gaol Tour<br />

Outside entrance to Cumberland Hospital, Fleet Street<br />

Visit Governor Macquarie’s innovative Female Factory - much<br />

more than a gaol, it was also a place of asylum, a workplace,<br />

the only women’s hospital in the colony, a site of marriage<br />

fairs and the place from which convict women were assigned.<br />

Hear the stories of these women dubbed, “the very dregs<br />

of society”. Walk in the footsteps of the convict women to<br />

understand their lifestyle, larrikin spirit, exploits, escapes and<br />

crimes. Wear closed walking shoes. Gentle stroll By public<br />

transport catch the free shuttle bus from Parramatta Station<br />

or Rivercat Ferry Wharf to Parramatta Leagues Club & a short<br />

walk from there.<br />

A display of finds from archaeological digs conducted on<br />

the sites of the first land grants along the Nepean River at<br />

Castlereagh. See how the early settlers lived. Also on display<br />

are items from other historic sites around the Penrith area<br />

including a large display of early bricks.<br />

Bring Something Back to St Bartholomew’s on the 171st<br />

Anniversary of the opening of the Church. Do you have any<br />

photographs of the church, weddings or christenings or<br />

service programs, relics that can be donated or copied. Guest<br />

Speaker at 10am, Associate Professor Carol Liston will talk<br />

about “Hidden Memories - What St Bartholomew’s can reveal<br />

about Western Sydney’s history”. There will be photographic<br />

displays, cemetery records, food, craft, white elephant stalls,<br />

cemetery conservation demonstration. Hourly shuttle bus<br />

from Blacktown Station, starting 9am, pickup shops side of<br />

station.<br />

Amazing Stories: Pastoral to Pleasure<br />

Prospect History Cottage, Prospect Reservoir, Reservoir Road<br />

This exhibition will tell the amazing story of the land that is<br />

now known as Prospect Reservoir, from the first European<br />

occupation by sentence expired convicts. It was later the<br />

pastoral holding of William Lawson, and next was acquired<br />

to build Prospect Reservoir. It has also been the site of a trout<br />

hatchery. Today the grounds are a very popular picnic ground<br />

as well as being home to a local history museum and Peckys<br />

Disability Services.<br />

Sewing Machines and Aprons<br />

The Riverstone Museum, 81 Garfield Road East<br />

A display of sewing machines and aprons from the Museum<br />

collection. Visitors are invited to bring along an apron and<br />

share the story of their apron. Machinery permitting there will<br />

be sewing demonstrations using a treadle sewing machine.<br />
