‘roughest toughest street cop Australia has ever seen’. Off
The New South Wales School Buildings of William E. Kemp,
1880-1896
Marrickville Library, cnr Marrickville and Petersham Rds
William Kemp’s school designs broke with the Gothic tradition
to introduce new architectural styles, incorporated natural
lighting and ventilation systems, and used affordable, local
materials. Kirsten Orr, University of Technology, Sydney, will
examine the effectiveness and functionality of his inventive
and innovative designs in the context of late-nineteenth
century and early-twentieth century standards for school
buildings. She will argue that Kemp’s work contributed
significantly to the development of the Federation style, which
later came to characterise suburban Australia.
1935 exhibition and the history of companies that took part,
