Amazing Bees - JW & WS Pender<br />

Brough House, 65 Church Street<br />

Celebrate the amazing story of JW and WS Pender. Pender<br />

Bros Ltd became the largest beekeeping equipment<br />

manufacturer and supplier in the Southern Hemisphere. In<br />

1899, WS Pender edited the first Australasian Beekeeper<br />

magazine (ABK) and continued for 32 years. The magazine is<br />

still in print. The event features talks by apiarists and others<br />

(Des Gannon, current editor of ABK), an exhibition of historical<br />

beekeeping equipment courtesy of the Powerhouse Museum<br />

and local apiarists and, many other “Bee” displays. The<br />

beekeeping equipment will be on display over the weekend<br />

of 28/29th April (Steamfest). Gold coin entry.<br />

NT Members $10 / Adults $12 and includes Morning tea<br />

(bottomless tea/coffee). Lunches can be purchased but MUST<br />

Hunter district 5 new exhibition including a rare opportunity to<br />

see, in regional Australia, one of the most significant private<br />

collections of art work by Australian Surrealist painting and<br />

artistic innovator James Gleeson. Visit Maitland Regional Art<br />

Gallery (MRAG) 14 April (2012) 3-5pm for the launch of 5 new<br />

exhibitions; come and enjoy wine from MRAG sponsor Tyrrell’s<br />

and delicious food from MRAG café Seraphine, entry is free<br />

Australia’s premier Festival of Steam, Hunter Valley<br />

Steamfest, is again set to excite the crowds as the Maitland<br />

Railway Station precinct comes to life with the spirit of steam<br />

over the weekend of 28 - 29 April. In 2012 Steamfest will<br />

highlight trains from our history through movies, books,<br />

paintings and stories. Our memories of trains will be brought<br />

back to life, so come along and share your memories.<br />

A rare opportunity to visit Clare’s Bridge, Great North Road,<br />

by self drive, motor vehicle, look at innovative interpretation<br />

in stone of timber bridge design. Inspect recent conservation<br />

work. Meet at Community Hall corner of Waratah Road,<br />

Central Mangrove to drive 11km through locked gates on well<br />

maintained fire trails to get to Clare’s Bridge. 4WD preferred.<br />

Bring picnic lunch, no facilities, bring weather protection and<br />

water.<br />

of innovation and inventions. (in the area.) From Aboriginal<br />

ingenuity to European innovation the region has a rich<br />

heritage reflecting creativity and adaptation that has carried<br />

through to today. Come along and hear guest speakers share<br />

their knowledge about innovation in areas such as industry,<br />

health and architecture. Refreshments included.<br />

Heritage Walk: Innovation and Use of the Government<br />

Domain<br />

James Fletcher Hospital, Watt Street - Meet at main gates<br />

Join us for a tour through this former Government Domain<br />

and historic military site (1843) that has been innovatively<br />

used and been home to numerous institutions including the<br />

Industrial Girls School in 1867. There are some amazing<br />

stories associated with the buildings and people associated<br />

with the place since European occupation in 1804, come<br />

and join committee members who have a keen interest in<br />

site to hear more about the stories. Tour includes a delicious<br />

morning tea at Monets’ in the former military hospital.<br />
