Mighty Mushrooms: the history of the Australian Mushroom
Growers Association
Hawkesbury Regional Museum, 8 Baker Street
The exhibition charts the progress of the industry from its
early days, when mushrooms were grown in disused railway
tunnels, through the post-war years and the contribution of socalled
‘displaced persons’, to the technological advancements
made in the 1970s and the huge increase in consumption
following the promotion of mushrooms in women’s magazines,
newspaper columns and TV cooking shows. Display includes
growing equipment such as a compost-ridging machine and
shelf growing system, as well as photographs, merchandise
and documentary footage. Closed Tuesdays, except for
booked groups by prior arrangement.
Repair and Restoration Committee St. Matthews
Open House and Devonshire Tea
74 The Terrace,
74 The Terrace was built in 1864. The cottage retains many
original Victorian features and retains the original fence of
cast and wrought iron inside and retains unspoiled cedar
woodwork, including an unusual set of bi-fold doors. Victorian
fire places abound with either cedar or marble surrounds,
three ceiling and the ventilation vents are of “art nouveau”.
Funds raised from the afternoon support the repair and
restoration of St. Matthews Anglican Church (Bell Tower
re-roofing). This is the first time in over 25 years since this
house was available for viewing. Wear sensible shoes. Ample
parking in close vicinity.
