Lace, linen <strong>and</strong> fabrics<br />
It’s cheaper <strong>to</strong> buy lace on Burano than in <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>Venice</strong>, but be warned<br />
that <strong>the</strong> cheapest stuff is machine-made <strong>and</strong> not from Burano ei<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> h<strong>and</strong>made<br />
work sold at <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>’s Scuola del Merlet<strong>to</strong> is expensive, though not <strong>to</strong><br />
a degree that’s disproportionate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> hours <strong>and</strong> labour that go in<strong>to</strong> making it<br />
– <strong>and</strong> this is <strong>the</strong> one outlet where you can be sure that what you’re buying is 100<br />
