Newspapers English <strong>and</strong> American newspapers<br />

can be found at <strong>the</strong> train station, by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Calle dell’Ascensione post office <strong>and</strong> at<br />

various st<strong>and</strong>s throughout <strong>the</strong> city – usually<br />

a day or two late.<br />

Pharmacies Italy operates a system called<br />

Farmacie di Turno, which ensures that you<br />

are never far from an open pharmacy at<br />

any time of day or night. Every one displays<br />

<strong>the</strong> address of <strong>the</strong> nearest late-opening<br />

pharmacy, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re’s always a full list in Un<br />

Ospite di Venezia (see p.36).<br />

Passports In <strong>the</strong> event of a lost passport,<br />

notify <strong>the</strong> Questura (see below) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n<br />

your consulate or embassy (see p.283).<br />

Police To notify police of a <strong>the</strong>ft or lost passport,<br />

report <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Questura on Piazzale<br />

Roma (t041.271.5511); in <strong>the</strong> event of an<br />

emergency, ring t113. <strong>The</strong>re’s also a small<br />

police station on <strong>the</strong> Piazza, at no. 63.<br />

Porters Porters <strong>to</strong>ut for trade at Piazzale<br />

Roma, <strong>the</strong> train station, <strong>the</strong> Accademia <strong>and</strong><br />

at places in <strong>the</strong> city where luxury hotels are<br />

concentrated – such as Riva degli Schiavoni<br />

<strong>and</strong> Calle Larga XXII Marzo. <strong>The</strong>ir charges<br />

begin at e15.50 for carrying one piece of<br />

luggage between any two points in <strong>the</strong> centre<br />

of <strong>the</strong> city, with a e7.75 supplement for<br />

each additional item.<br />

Post offices <strong>Venice</strong>’s main post office is in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fondaco dei Tedeschi, near <strong>the</strong> Rial<strong>to</strong><br />

bridge (Mon–Sat 8.30am–6.30pm). Any<br />

poste restante should be addressed <strong>to</strong><br />

Fermo Posta, Fondaco dei Tedeschi, 80100<br />

Venezia; take your passport with you when<br />

collecting your post. <strong>The</strong> principal branch<br />

post offices are in Calle dell’Ascensione, at<br />

Záttere 1406, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Piazzale Roma<br />

vaporet<strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ps (Mon–Fri 8.30am–2pm, Sat<br />

8.30am–1pm). Stamps can also be bought<br />

in tabacchi, as well as in some gift shops.<br />

Public <strong>to</strong>ilets <strong>The</strong>re are <strong>to</strong>ilets on or very near<br />

<strong>to</strong> most of <strong>the</strong> main squares. You’ll need a<br />

e1 coin, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ilets are usually staffed,<br />

so you can get change; note that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Venice</strong><br />

Card (see p.37) gives free access <strong>to</strong> many<br />

staffed <strong>to</strong>ilets. <strong>The</strong> main facilities are: at<br />

<strong>the</strong> train station; at Piazzale Roma; on <strong>the</strong><br />

west side of <strong>the</strong> Accademia bridge; by <strong>the</strong><br />

main <strong>to</strong>urist office, in <strong>the</strong> Giardinetti Reali;<br />

off <strong>the</strong> west side of <strong>the</strong> Piazza; off Campo<br />

S. Bar<strong>to</strong>lomeo; on Campo Rial<strong>to</strong> Nuovo; on
