Tajikistan is proving its commitment to achieve MDGs through the comprehensive<br />

National Development Strategy to be developed with the support from the <strong>UN</strong> in<br />

Tajikistan, and <strong>UN</strong>DP in particular. The strategy will be based on the MDGs and also the<br />

findings of the recently published MDG needs assessment which clearly defines interventions<br />

and funding needed to achieve sustainable development. Environment,<br />

including water and sanitation, as well as disaster risk management, would be the integral<br />

elements of this strategy and are the key sectors to the attainment of all the MDGs<br />

set for Tajikistan.The president is personally leading the development of the strategy, and<br />

personally chairing the first government meeting where the process for developing the<br />

strategy will be approved.<br />

The objective of the NCSA proccess is to determine the priority capacity development needs of Tajikistan in order to meet its commitments<br />

to global environmental management, specifically in the areas of biodiversity, climate change and combating desertification.<br />

<strong>UN</strong>DP in partnership with AKDN, and SDC, is providing coordinated and substantial support to the Government of Tajikistan to organize<br />

and conduct the International Conference on Transboundary River issues. The main goals of the Conference are to increase regional<br />

cooperation management of transboundary river basins, establish dialog among Central Asian countries on management of transboundary<br />

river basins, and work out recommendations to resolve current issues.<br />

The Promotion of Renewable Energy Use for Development of Rural Communities interventions in Tajikistan will substitute the current,<br />

unsustainable use of wood and fossil fuel resources by introducing mechanisms to facilitate the implementation of renewable energy<br />

technologies on a cost recovery basis and simultaneously boost the social and economic development of the communities.<br />

The overall goal of the “Demonstrating Local Responses to Combating Land Degradation and Improving Sustainable Land Management<br />

in SW Tajikistan”is to demonstrate the potential to implement replicable Sustainable Land Management initiatives at the local level and<br />

to build the capacity of local structures to do this.<br />

Establishing an effective system of core protected areas to ensure long-term conservation of the unique and globally significant biodiversity<br />

is a major objective in Tajikistan.The GEF is staring with Gissar Mountains.Tajikistan is also evaluating its capacity building needs,<br />

defining country specific priorities, analyzing functional capabilities and determining mechanisms necessary to protect national biodiversity<br />

in accordance with the BSAP recommendations.<br />

<strong>UN</strong>DP and Tajikistan are implementing a GEF-funded project that aims to strengthen the country’s efforts in complying with Montreal<br />

Protocol measures. The project focuses in the refrigeration sector and provides technical assistance and technology transfer that contribute<br />

to enhancement of national public-private partnerships.<br />
