You would have to see the whole splendour for yourself, the beautiful works of art, the exquisite paintings, the building, the water features and so on – if you want to get an idea of it. I’ll name just one detail. They have a Turkish mosque (a temple) here; some people might not even notice it among all these beauties, but I liked it best of them all. The whole thing is like Hohenheim and the Solitude taken together, as far as I am concerned.
V. Chronology (Tanja Fischer) 766 First written reference to the settlement of “Suezzingen” in the Codex Laureshamensis (Lorsch Codex, a collection of documents detailing the possessions of, and gifts given to, the monastery of Lorsch). 1350 First written reference to the ‚Feste’ (fort or fortifi ed manor) of Schwetzingen. 1427 The ‘Feste’ of Schwetzingen is the property, without restrictions, of the Counts Palatine. 1472 Written documents refer to a “Schloss” (i.e. a palace, stately home or country seat) instead of a fort. Friedrich der Siegreiche (“the Victorious”) buys land from the town of Schwetzingen to lay out a garden. 1541 The palace is altered and enlarged under Elector Ludwig V. 1618-1648 Thirty Years’ War. Schwetzingen is plundered in 1621, and burned down in 1635, along with the palace. from 1656 Rebuilding of the palace under Elector Carl Ludwig. 1688-1697 Palatine War of Succession. In 1689, the palace is destroyed again. 1690 Johann Wilhelm becomes Elector Palatine. 1698-1717 The palace is rebuilt and considerably enlarged by Elector Johann Wilhelm. To the east, the court of honour wings are added, while the core building is extended to the west. 1716 Carl Philipp becomes Elector Palatine. 1718 The fi rst orangery is built west of the palace by the architect Alessandro Galli da Bibiena (completed 1728). Between the palace and the orangery, a pleasure garden with a basin and fountain is laid out (waterworks built 1725). 1720 Elector Carl Philipp moves the residence from Heidelberg to Mannheim, and starts building a palace there. Schwetzingen is raised to the status of a hunting and summer residence; the Schwetzingen-Heidelberg axis is visually represented by an avenue of mulberry trees. 1742 Carl Theodor becomes Elector Palatine. 1743-1778 Schwetzingen serves as a summer residence for several months every year. During that time, the court and court orchestra move to Schwetzingen on a regular basis. 1748 Planning for a “New Town” is under way. Two medieval settlements are connected by a new palace square, a central axis (today’s Carl- Theodor-Straße) and residential quarters on both sides of it. The palace of Schwetzingen is converted to meet the requirements of a summer residence. The northern quarter-circle pavilion is built (completed 1750). 1749 Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796) takes up work at Schwetzingen. Carl Theodor appoints him “Intendant dero Gärthen und Wasserkünsten” (i.e. supervisor of gardens and water features). V. 187
