After the very first transportations, dating back to 2008, more and
more container block trains from Southeast Asia transit across the
territory of Slovakia.
Last year, the Russian company TransContainer, as a renter, entered
the combined transport terminal in Dobrá. ZSSK CARGO and the
strategic partner signed a contract on lease of combined transport
terminal for the period of 15 years. The objective of this lease is to
attract the new transhipment and transportation performances to the
terminal. The first freight container train, since the terminal in Dobrá
was rented, crossed the Slovak-Ukraine border in Čierna nad Tisou/
Chop on 21.November 2009. Twenty containers of pilot train from
Inchon (Korea) through Yingkou (China), Zabajkalsk (Russia), and
Chop (Ukraine) to combined transport terminal in Dobrá (Slovakia)
travelled more than ten thousand kilometres in 17 days.
On this route, containers were transhipped because of different track
gauges in individual countries twice. Even with these technical breaks,
the train ran, on average, almost 600 kilometres a day. Destination
station of the pilot train was in Wroclaw, Poland. Immediately after
the transhipment of the first train, the CEO advisor of company
TransContainer, Mr. Oleg Agafoncev commented on the prospect that
the pilot train would be followed by other trains. And the following
months were a proof of his expectations.
Another train arrived at combined transport terminal in Dobrá on
15.December 2009. Thirty-four containers went to Austria on two
block trains. From January to 9.February, another five container trains
with destination in Poland were transhipped. For the transportation
of containers to early February 2010, 111 wagons were used and 124
containers were transported from East Asia to Europe.
Shunting between Čierna nad Tisou and combined transport terminal
Dobrá as well as shunting from combined transport terminal Dobrá
to the railway station Pribeník, from where the block container trains
were dispatched, were carried out by ZSSK CARGO. The company also
acted as a carrier of all trains, and containers from wagons of broad
gauge were transhipped to its own normal-gauge wagons.
These were the new hinge-connected Sggmrss 90’ wagons,
suitable for transportation of large-capacity 20, 30, 40 and 45-
foot containers. Their advantage is interoperability, variability of
transported intermodal transport units, variability of container and
swap body loading as well as protection of transported goods. Besides
Sggmrss, the wagons of series Lgs, Kbkks and Sgnss, which are a part
of modernized rolling stocks of company ZSSK CARGO, are used to
transport containers to the destination station.
Transportation of goods from Asia through the territory of Russia,
Ukraine and Slovakia, using the services of combined transport
terminal in Dobrá will result in shorter transit time and guarantee
quality service for customers. Compared with the traditional
transportation by sea, the period of transportation was reduced
by half. Each of seven trains arrived at the final destination station
within twenty days. This time shows that transportations of goods by
rail in direction east - west by the Trans-Siberian railway are a strong
competitor for sea transport.
The operators must become aware of the strategic contact of two
railway gauges in V. international railway corridor, which is also at the
interface of two different traffic law systems and customs systems.
Positive experiences in provision of container transhipment in
combined transport terminal in Dobrá, as well as services provided by
the carrier ZSSK CARGO already exist.
