Železničná spoločnosť Cargo Slovakia, a.s., (ZSSK CARGO) transported
nearly 33.8 million tonnes of goods in 2009. This volume of
transportations means an inter-annual decrease by more than 10.7
million tonnes on one hand (-24.1%), however on the other hand, it
means an increase by nearly 2.8 million tonnes (+8.9%) against the
plan.
Volume of transportations, compared to previous year, declined
in all commodities, especially those which are directly related to
metallurgical and construction industry (iron ore -21.5%, metals
-38.5%, building materials -38.7%); as well as to manufacturing of cars
(unspecified -37.0%). On the contrary, the lowest decline was indicated
in intermodal transport (-12.9%) and transportation of coal (-11.9%),
where the company managed to partially replace the idleness period
of metallurgical enterprises, heating plants and power plants by transit
transportations of coal and coke in direction north - south.
Global financial and economic crisis that has hit the economy of
the Slovak Republic and other countries resulted in a decrease in
performances of ZSSK CARGO. There was a sharp decline in demand
for transportations at the end of 2008 and the following year continued
along the same line. A slight recovery and an increase in transported
volumes were recorded in the second half of 2009 (especially in
October), but it is still much less than in years prior to the crisis. The
last two months of the previous year have again returned to the level
of months July to September due to reduced production in many
manufacturing companies, in particular due to factory holidays during
the Christmas period.
The highest share in transportations of ZSSK CARGO is still made up
of bulk substrates (29% iron ore and coal 19%), followed by metals
(mainly scrap metal, steel and products thereof, non-ferrous ores
13%) and also building materials and oil products, both at 8%. Once
again, we can observe dependence of performances of ZSSK CARGO
on conditions and development of metallurgical and engineering
industries. In the past, transportations related to the metallurgical
industry made approximately 60% of the total volume in ZSSK CARGO;
in 2008 it was approximately 58% and in 2009 only 55%.
The highest share in transportations of the company is made up of
international transport (import, export and transit), which made 88.5%
in its total volume of transportations last year.
