Editor’s letter
Be Vibrant
Looking through this issue, I think I see China’s spirit brimming
up. What colours! Blue, yellow, white, purple, pink,
red, orange — find them all on a single piece of antique
Chinese porcelain or on one embroidered vintage gown.
Traditional Chinese people were in love with colours and
we hope you’ll be in love with all the stories and ideas on
our pages in this edition.
Seldom do you find a house made of glossy blue bricks.
On page 78, “Modernist Gem,” go inside one and discover
how Brad Lamoureux’s simple but ingenious architecture
made a cozy space expand and subtly course with colour.
Our style pages are rife with dreamy combinations and
textures. On page 100, Taste of Life’s Lens is a leafy, painterly
trek through a fashion kingdom, all four seasons of it.
For more autumn ideas, we focused on fireplaces in our
Better Living Guide, page 68. Campfires, fire pits and living
room hearths are unfamiliar to people from mainland China
but they’re eager to get in on the fun. October is the perfect
time to trade-in the digital flicker for a purely orange one
and connect to something elemental.
Our interviewees this month are filled with hearts of gold.
Robert Lee shows us all how much good an individual can
do in “Inspirational Philanthropy,” page 56, while Joy Chao
& John Henshaw demonstrate harmony in their live/love/
work/create existence: “Design Duo,” page 60.
In this edition’s cover story, Diana Teng imbues her role at
Shen Yun Performing Arts with sunshine from her home in
California. Her artform — classical Chinese dance — requires
her to perform as much with her heart and mind as with
her body. Teng had to go on a journey inside herself before
she could take to the stage as a principal dancer, portraying
princesses, heavenly maidens and even a demon from
ancient lore. Don’t miss “California Dreamin’” on page 50.
Wishing you an October filled with luxurious moments refined
through the wisdom of Eastern and Western cultures.
Sincerely,
Brett Price, Managing Editor, English
