8. MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY OF THE GENUS LOLIUM<br />

lotypes could not be treated as species specific. They should rather be perceived as the typical<br />

feature of allogamous species. In spite of diverse haplotypes a certain degree of similarity<br />

could be found. The haplotypes of L. perenne ssp. perenne and L. rigidum were mostly the<br />

same with the only one additional band in perenne. Another subspecies, multiflorum apart<br />

from a common pattern typical of perenne and L. rigidum had additional five bands. All these<br />

bands were shared with L. loliaceum and moreover three with P. pratensis. Closely related<br />

with Lolium, F. pratensis had all bands but one typical of Lolium.<br />

To study in more details relationships between Lolium species a mitochondrial gene<br />

derived from L. perenne ssp. multiflorum was amplified and after confirming that a single<br />

product was obtained, it was subjected to restriction analyses. Among seven Lolium<br />

taxa studied, only four gave a single band. These were all allogamous species (multiflorum,<br />

perenne and L. rigidum) in addition to autogamous L. loliaceum. Moreover, a single
