Child Protective Services (CPS) Training Modules<br />

Course Syllabus Type <strong>of</strong> Training<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> and referral procedures for community<br />

resources.<br />

Call Floor<br />

Training<br />

1 day training designed to develop knowledge and<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> CPS investigators on how to screen and<br />

evaluate reports made to the Child Abuse/Neglect Hotline.<br />

This includes call floor protocol, learning telephone etiquette<br />

and investigative techniques, prioritizing information,<br />

understanding the four criteria for abuse/neglect reports,<br />

investigative decision-making, writing a CPS report narrative,<br />

the protocol for routing child welfare information and making<br />

child welfare referrals. Afternoon session includes training<br />

on entering information into the <strong>RI</strong>CHIST system.<br />

6 hour training – to instruct staff on preventive techniques<br />

including verbal messages to de-escalate acting out behavior;<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the team approach and therapeutic physical<br />

intervention, applying personal safety techniques to avoid<br />

injury; and post-vention activities focusing on building<br />

therapeutic techniques to be implemented after acting out<br />

behavior has occurred.<br />

3 hour training designed to increase knowledge and<br />

competency in the area <strong>of</strong> legal information for CPS<br />

investigators through lecture and the review <strong>of</strong> pertinent child<br />

protection laws. The course provides training on:<br />

Evidence rules for CPIs<br />

Types <strong>of</strong> evidence/gathering evidence<br />

Hearsay (<strong>RI</strong>GL 14-1-68 and 69)<br />

Laws relating to investigations/holds/examinations<br />

(<strong>RI</strong>GL 40-11-1, etc)<br />

Licensing (<strong>RI</strong>GL 42-72.1-4)<br />

Confidentiality (<strong>RI</strong>GL 42-72-8)<br />
