In this Report information has been used from The STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economy Activity Model) which more directly relates to the indicators required and is consistent with data used by other agencies in the East Midlands. The way the UKTS information is collected and the way it is presented means that it would not have been compatible with the information presented in the 2004/05 report. The ABI employment data shows that although most areas have seen an increase in employment in tourism between 2004 and 2005 there was a decline in Lincolnshire, although it still remains an important sector of that local economy. Policy Commentary 4.79 Tourism remains an important source of employment for the East Midlands, particularly in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire (in terms of the numbers employed) and in Rutland 9.67 6.32 12.35 6.32 8.08 42.74 (in terms of the proportion of total jobs), but with significant numbers of jobs throughout the Region. 4.80 The tourism data reliability issues identified in the previous AMR have now been addressed by the use of STEAM data. Increasing levels of employment supported by tourism expenditure, spend by visitors and numbers of overnight stays are an indication of progress being made in this policy area although it seems likely that further potential remains in view of the number of recognised attractions in the region. 4.81 In Northamptonshire for example, destination management is a goal to increase visitor spend and overnight stays including a review of tourist information centres and the promotion of activities such as walking and fine dining. Specific policies are being developed to ensure opportunities for rural diversification activities, which may include increasing provision of rural facilities. 4.82 Leicestershire County Council, through the Leicestershire Rural Partnership administers the Rural Visitor Grant Scheme (RVGS) to help businesses raise the quality and accessibility of their tourism product, and improve the visitor experience throughout
