(Armstr<strong>on</strong>g, 1993). Meckler (1991) <strong>and</strong> Armstr<strong>on</strong>g (1993) presented the following<br />

general design approaches that address the challenges of the arctic cold climate.<br />

• The HVAC systems must be easily maintained <strong>and</strong> reliable, because transportati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

expensive <strong>and</strong> sometimes not available due to bad weather.<br />

• It is important to c<strong>on</strong>sider local microclimate c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, because temperatures stay at<br />

design c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for l<strong>on</strong>g periods.<br />

• <strong>Building</strong> penetrati<strong>on</strong>s should be kept to a minimum, because of high wind <strong>and</strong> snow<br />

drifting.<br />

• Cooling <strong>and</strong> ventilating systems must be designed for c<strong>on</strong>tinuous operati<strong>on</strong> without<br />

reducing loads during the night, because solar gains do not subside during the night.<br />

Designers should ensure that computerized load analysis programs account for<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinuous solar gain c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

• To avoid c<strong>on</strong>densati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> ensure the effectiveness of draft, the heating appliance<br />

flue should be routed through an insulated or warm space.<br />

Forced-air heating systems are more comm<strong>on</strong> in cold regi<strong>on</strong>s, because of their simplicity<br />

of installati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> maintenance (Meckler, 1991). Space heaters usually lead to severe<br />

stratificati<strong>on</strong>, because heat distributi<strong>on</strong> is usually by natural c<strong>on</strong>vecti<strong>on</strong>. Radiant floor or<br />

wall panel heating systems may not be suitable when outdoor temperatures fall below -<br />

54ºC (-65ºF), because corresp<strong>on</strong>ding design floor temperatures may exceed the ASHRAE<br />

comfort guidelines of 30ºC (85ºF) or above for light footwear. Occupants must wear<br />

heavy footwear, as it is often necessary in cold climates to restrict radiant floor<br />

temperatures to about 21ºC (70ºF).<br />

Humidificati<strong>on</strong> equipment ranges from self-c<strong>on</strong>tained atomizing units placed in the<br />

occupied space to pan or steam-grid units placed downstream of the heating unit in the air<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong> system. Temperatures of the indoor wall surfaces <strong>and</strong> glass should be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidered in the design of the humidificati<strong>on</strong> system to avoid c<strong>on</strong>densati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> frost<br />

issues.<br />

Ventilati<strong>on</strong>: Design C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> details of air intakes <strong>and</strong> exhausts require particular attenti<strong>on</strong> to avoid<br />

entrainment of exhaust gasses <strong>and</strong> to keep out driving snow, which can easily be<br />

entrained because, usually, it is light <strong>and</strong> flaky. In some regi<strong>on</strong>s air intakes <strong>and</strong> exhausts<br />

need to be protected from hoarfrost or snow.<br />

Locati<strong>on</strong>s to Avoid<br />

Air intakes <strong>and</strong> outlets should be located high but not through the roof. Roof-mounted<br />

inlets <strong>and</strong> outlets are not desirable, except in areas with little snowfall. Avoid locating<br />

inlets <strong>on</strong> the windward side. The North Series # 8 (CMHC, 2001-2003) presents<br />

strategies to prevent plumbing <strong>and</strong> heating vent stacks from freezing.<br />
