Agricultural and Forest Sci<strong>en</strong>cesInternational Agribusiness and Rural Developm<strong>en</strong>t – IARDInstitutionLocationCourse focusGeorg-August-University Götting<strong>en</strong> and University of Talca,Chile.Foun<strong>de</strong>d in 1737, the Georg-August-University Götting<strong>en</strong> (GAUG)is a research university of high international standing. Famous sci<strong>en</strong>tistssuch as Gauß, von Haller, Weber, Nernst and Heis<strong>en</strong>berg, toics,biology, chemistry, and physics. Forty-four laureates have be<strong>en</strong>strongly connected to the University, 12 of them explicitly honoured forresearch work in Götting<strong>en</strong>.GAUG comprises 13 faculties including Agricultural Sci<strong>en</strong>ces, 3,246sci<strong>en</strong>tists including 411 professors, 24,500 stu<strong>de</strong>nts from 133 countries,and mo<strong>de</strong>rn library facilities with more than four million volumesFoun<strong>de</strong>d in 1981, the University of Talca has progressively becomeone of Chile’s main refer<strong>en</strong>ts of higher education. It is situated in thecity of Talca, within the Maule Region, Chile’s VII Region, 257 kmsouth of Santiago <strong>de</strong> Chile. The University of Talca, foun<strong>de</strong>d in 1981,offers 21 Bachelor’s <strong>de</strong>gree programmes, 23 Master’s and four Ph.D.neering,Business, Accounting, D<strong>en</strong>tistry, Medical Technology andMechanical Engineering.The Faculties of Agriculture of the Universities of Götting<strong>en</strong> and Tal-introduced the new postgraduate course in International AgribusinessThe programme speakers are Prof. Dr. Stephan von Cramon-Tauba<strong>de</strong>l,Departm<strong>en</strong>t of Agricultural Economics and Rural Developm<strong>en</strong>t (onbehalf of the Faculty of Agricultural Sci<strong>en</strong>ces, University of Götting<strong>en</strong>)and Prof. Dr. José Diaz Osorio (on behalf of the University of Talca).The core study programme consists of modules covering internationalagricultural economics, agricultural and rural <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t policy aswell as business administration, managem<strong>en</strong>t and agribusiness marketing,<strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t economics and rural sociology.As a research-ori<strong>en</strong>ted programme, strong emphasis is placed onmarketing and social sci<strong>en</strong>ces. The programme further offers a numberof optional modules in agricultural technology, agronomy and animalproduction. Modules also inclu<strong>de</strong> seminars, computer-ai<strong>de</strong>d exercises,and teamwork to <strong>en</strong>hance the pres<strong>en</strong>tation, communication andteam-building skills of stu<strong>de</strong>nts.The course is of 21 months’ duration (including a two-month Germanlanguage course in Latin America). There are three teaching semes-two semesters some stu<strong>de</strong>nts can be selected to continue their studiesin Germany according to their aca<strong>de</strong>mic performance and also<strong>de</strong>p<strong>en</strong>ding upon language skills and other criteria, while other stu-81
