Justus Liebig University combinesup-to-date research and teaching with the tradition of a universitywhich is now almost 400 years old. Today, the university hasabout 22,000 stu<strong>de</strong>nts, about 10 per c<strong>en</strong>t of whom belong to the newlyfoun<strong>de</strong>d faculty of Agriculture, Food Sci<strong>en</strong>ces and Environm<strong>en</strong>talManagem<strong>en</strong>t.The University of Hoh<strong>en</strong>heim, which was foun<strong>de</strong>d in 1818, is locatedoutsi<strong>de</strong> the city of Stuttgart close to the airport. The main building isan old castle surroun<strong>de</strong>d by large parks and two experim<strong>en</strong>tal farms.Short distances betwe<strong>en</strong> all campus facilities make the ori<strong>en</strong>tation fornew incoming stu<strong>de</strong>nts easy and allow a familiar atmosphere. Agricultureis a dominant faculty with a large number of international stu<strong>de</strong>nts,ext<strong>en</strong>sive curricula and a high proportion of Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nts.This Ph.D. course is offered to candidates from all over the world.Language of instruction is English, but the programme inclu<strong>de</strong>s aGerman language crash course. Prior to the thesis research, coursework of about four months is nee<strong>de</strong>d. The thesis research may <strong>de</strong>alwith any kind of agricultural <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t at micro, regional or macrothe candidate’s home country. The aim is to qualify the candidates asresearchers and teachers, who are th<strong>en</strong> able to analyse problems and<strong>de</strong>velop solutions for their home countries in a systematic way. Today,most of the former stu<strong>de</strong>nts are acting as multipliers of knowledge atuniversities or other institutions in their home countries. This objectiveis supported by the many ongoing cooperation and continuingexchange activities that take place after completion of the programmein Giess<strong>en</strong> or Hoh<strong>en</strong>heim.EnglishYoung sci<strong>en</strong>tists from Africa, Asia or Latin America with two years ofprofessional experi<strong>en</strong>ce after receiving their M.Sc. <strong>de</strong>gree. Applicationsare invited primarily from universities and national and internationalresearch institutions for staff <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t, but applicationsfrom M.Sc. <strong>de</strong>gree hol<strong>de</strong>rs already employed in governm<strong>en</strong>t, admi n-istration, consultancies, international ag<strong>en</strong>cies and industry are alsoaccepted.• Master’s <strong>de</strong>gree or equival<strong>en</strong>t is required with a minimum gra<strong>de</strong> of Aor B (the better the gra<strong>de</strong>, the higher the chances)• Master’s exam should have be<strong>en</strong> completed at least two yearsbefore applying to <strong>en</strong>sure that the candidate has ample work experi<strong>en</strong>ce• TOEFL with a minimum of 213 points computer based, 550 pointspaper based, 79 points internet based or equival<strong>en</strong>t is prerequisiteDr. sc. agr. / (Ph.D.)76
