The city of Bonn can look back upon a history of more than2000 years. As Fe<strong>de</strong>ral City, Bonn is headquarters to a large numberof international institutions including the GIZ and various UnitedNations secretariats.Agricultural production uses natural resources in diverse ways. Theseresources show complex interactions and are s<strong>en</strong>sitive to humanactivities and interv<strong>en</strong>tions. Their appropriate managem<strong>en</strong>t requiresskilled individuals with both the biophysical and the socioeconomicbackground knowledge. The ARTS programme is <strong>de</strong>signed as aresearch-ori<strong>en</strong>ted, multidisciplinary approach to expand stu<strong>de</strong>nts’overall background in the basic and applied managem<strong>en</strong>t of naturalresources for agricultural <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t and research in (sub)tropical<strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>ts. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts <strong>de</strong>velop a holistic, cross-disciplinary un<strong>de</strong>rstandingand acquire a systems’ view of structure, use, interactions,<strong>en</strong>dangerm<strong>en</strong>t and protection of natural resources. Graduates fromthe ARTS Master’s programme (M.Sc.) are equipped with skills andtools to recognize and solve problems related to (sub)tropical resourcemanagem<strong>en</strong>t, thus• making them effective lea<strong>de</strong>rs for agricultural <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t• preparing them for agricultural and <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>tal research and<strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t positions• The ARTS programme ext<strong>en</strong>ds over 24 months and is structuredinto compulsory and optional modules, following the European CreditTransfer System. The international organisations located in Bonn offeropportunities for internships to registered ARTS stu<strong>de</strong>nts, and repres<strong>en</strong>tativescontribute to lectures and seminars.• vidingan overview on the structure and use of resources in (sub)tropical agriculture. Interdisciplinary lectures and seminars focus onresource interactions in relation to the social, economical and politicalcontext and are supplem<strong>en</strong>ted by practical exercises and diversesocio-cultural activities.• In the second semester, stu<strong>de</strong>nts <strong>de</strong>ep<strong>en</strong> their knowledge by choos-cialisationareas: a) ecosystem b) molecular and physiological, orc) social-economic approaches to resource managem<strong>en</strong>t.• The third study semester, un<strong>de</strong>r the theme “from knowledge toaction”, prepares stu<strong>de</strong>nts to translate research questions into activitiesand projects.
