Kaiserslautern (100,000 inhabitants) is located in theheart of the European Union, by the famous, recreational PalatinateForest and close to the Fr<strong>en</strong>ch bor<strong>de</strong>r in the west. Frankfurt airport isa 90-minute train ri<strong>de</strong> away.Kaiserslautern offers all the am<strong>en</strong>ities of a mo<strong>de</strong>rn city, including arich and vivid culture and sports sc<strong>en</strong>e.For 36 months, the PhD stu<strong>de</strong>nts will pursue their research supervisedby a professor of the University of Kaiserslautern. In g<strong>en</strong>eral, supervisorand stu<strong>de</strong>nt <strong>de</strong>termine the topic of the PhD thesis in cooperationwith a company, oft<strong>en</strong> via the “Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Mathematics”(ITWM).Participants of the MIC programme apply mo<strong>de</strong>rn mathematical theories(partial differ<strong>en</strong>tial equations, stochastics, singularity theory, etc.)to mo<strong>de</strong>l technological, economic and ecological problems.
