Developm<strong>en</strong>t Co-operationZEF Doctoral Studies ProgramCourse languageTarget groupEntry requirem<strong>en</strong>tsBy pooling the expertise of the three <strong>de</strong>partm<strong>en</strong>ts, this three-year DoctoralProgram <strong>en</strong>ables the stu<strong>de</strong>nts to take advantage of ZEF´s exceptionalstr<strong>en</strong>gth in interdisciplinary <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t research and cooperationwith national and international institutions.The doctoral research areas: The research plan to be submitted bycandidates should be formulated in refer<strong>en</strong>ce to the core researchthemes of ZEF and its constitu<strong>en</strong>t <strong>de</strong>partm<strong>en</strong>ts (see below). In exceptionalcases, ZEF may also consi<strong>de</strong>r proposed projects for a doctoral<strong>de</strong>gree that lie outsi<strong>de</strong> these themes.ZEF‘s cross-cutting research areas are: Governance, Water resources,Land use and food security; R<strong>en</strong>ewable <strong>en</strong>ergy; Environm<strong>en</strong>tal andclimate change; Mobility and migration. The research areas of thethree <strong>de</strong>partm<strong>en</strong>ts are (1) Sci<strong>en</strong>ce policy and knowledge; Institutions;Social and cultural change and adaption; (2) Growth, inequality andpoverty; Global <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t and tra<strong>de</strong>; Economic change and vulnerability;(3) Ecosystem services; Sustainable use of biological resources; Biodiversity.More <strong>de</strong>tails are available at www.zef.<strong>de</strong>EnglishThe targeted group of participants are stu<strong>de</strong>nts around the world with<strong>de</strong>grees acquired in their home countries or from elsewhere; youngsci<strong>en</strong>tists from universities or already employed in national or internationalresearch institutions, governm<strong>en</strong>t, or the private sector with aninterest in interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving.Since its inception in 1999, 5472 PhD stu<strong>de</strong>nts from 84 countries haveparticipated in the ZEF Doctoral Studies Program, and 246 of themhave completed their doctoral theses at ZEF, 97 of them external doctoralstu<strong>de</strong>nts.
