It has a population of about200,000 inhabitants.Sustainable <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t and accordingly sustainability in the manifoldrelationships betwe<strong>en</strong> humans and the <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>t have becomeintegral rules of conduct in politics and society. This is also true in economics,where for many companies a commitm<strong>en</strong>t to the principles ofsustainability has become a c<strong>en</strong>tral strategic competitive advantage.One of the major chall<strong>en</strong>ges to the implem<strong>en</strong>tation of the overall conceptof sustainable <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t concerns effective governance processesbetwe<strong>en</strong> various stakehol<strong>de</strong>rs regarding the wise use of <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>talresources within companies, administrations, organisations,and society at large.The M.Sc. Programme ‘Environm<strong>en</strong>tal Governance’ (MEG) addressesthis special need.
