The Slope of <strong>Maphumulo</strong> indicates that there is a very steep slope occurrence in a large partof the municipal boundary that has an impact on the growth and development of the areaas the steep slopes makes service provision difficult.2.3.2 CLIMATE CHANGE & COP 17DAEARD is engaged with the district in a number of activities such as promoting anddistributing green light activities to holding road-shows. As such the Department hosted 5road-shows within the district. The key sectors were health, agriculture, environment andtourism. Thus far disctrict has held a Climate Change Summit to raise awareness and iscurrently working on developing a framework that will guide risk assessment. The currentinitiatives by ilembe District and DAEARD which are aimed at combating climate changeinclude greening initiatives, such as planting of indigenous trees, enhancement of greenspaces and establishment of green corridors that will act as carbon sinks, promotion ofcommunity projects like organic farming and possible research.The Climate Change and Rural <strong>Development</strong> Round Table Discussions were held on 22February 2011 following the March 2010 Kwanaloga Rural <strong>Development</strong> and ClimateChange Summit, and the August 2010 iLembe District Summit on Climate Change. Thepurpose of these discussions was to create the platform needed to promote effectivediscussion and information sharing in view of the role that municipalities play in climatechange mitigation and adaptation. Being the only District Municipality to host a follow updiscussion, the iLembe District prepared for the COP17 which was hosted from November-December 2011, in South Africa. The DAEARD scheduled, pre-COP17 district clean-ups,targeted at the community, learners and educators and involving the E<strong>KZN</strong>W, SAPPI andUmgeni Water. These are to take place at the <strong>Maphumulo</strong> Taxi Rank, Ndwedwe Taxi Rank,Ward 4 Hlomendlini, KwaDukuza Village to name a few. The DAEARD has also scheduled inMay 2011, COP17 Road Shows and school presentations over a five day period in all iLembemunicipalities, as well as land clean-ups. Environ Quiz was conducted within the iLemberegion. The Arbor week in September 2011 brought the concepts of COP 17 to life.ILembe District and its family of municipalities is acutely aware of the impact that energypoverty has on hindering development and economic growth as acknowledged in itsIntegrated <strong>Development</strong> Plan (<strong>IDP</strong>). Table 7 below highlights the energy used for lighting iniLembe households and in its family of local municipalities.
