Eco-School ProgrammeWithin IDM, DAEARD has been running this programme to promote green schools and greenlearning activities which complement the education syllabus and thus allow learners toexplore the practical side of learning. Destruction of riparian habit. Effects on floodplain functionality. Re-suspension of material leading to deposition in downstream estuarine environment,there by changing benthic habit. Influences on turbidity levels in estuarine waters, thereby affecting system productivity. Water and energy availability for mining activities cannot be guaranteed.Waste Management Significant backlogs occur. There are reported cases where waste is burnt as a management strategy. This has adverse air quality and social impacts. Lack of waste management in the rural areas.2.4 INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT2.4.1 SUMMARY OF BACKLOGS AND ACHIEVEMENTS2.4.1.1 <strong>Maphumulo</strong> Backlogs and AchievementsWaterIn terms of Water infrastructure a total of 10,946 households have been provided withpotable water since 2006, addressing approximately 52 % of the total backlog of 21,119households recorded in 2006. Currently the backlog for water provision in <strong>Maphumulo</strong> isestimated at 10,173 households.
