MAP 24: iLembe Urban Zone Map4.14.2 RATIONALE FOR THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT LINESThe rationale for the urban development lines in the Region is to encourage:The protection of high potential agricultural land through the containment of urbandevelopment;The creation of efficient urban and rural spaces that provide spatial lifestyle choices forresidents in and to the Region;The efficient and sustainable supply of bulk water and sanitation that addresses bothbacklogs as well as frontlogs.4.14.3 MAPHUMULO LOCAL MUNICIPALITYThe urban development line is the approved general plan of the <strong>Maphumulo</strong> town. The periurbanline of the <strong>Maphumulo</strong> Local Municipality is the desired future growth of municipality,which moves from a North West direction to an easterly direction along the main road. Theother peri-urban areas within this municipality have established settlements that are growingwhich are anticipated to densify over the next 20-30 year period. The remainder of themunicipality is the rural zone which contains significant portions of environmentally importantgrasslands and bio-diversity. There is also a tourism intervention zone at Kwashushu as thisarea has been identified by the local municipality as a tourism investment area.4.15 IMPLEMENTING THE SDFThe Spatial <strong>Development</strong> Framework for <strong>Maphumulo</strong> Municipality has the following criticalaspects:__________________________________________________________________________________________<strong>Maphumulo</strong> Integrated <strong>Development</strong> Plan (<strong>IDP</strong>) 2012 - 2013Final June 2012Page 90 of 142
