Workshop for Teaching Medical Professionalismat the Kulliyah (faculty) of Medicine at InternationalIslamic University Malaysia (IIUM)Ariff bin Osman*AbstractTraining medical professionals requires thorough planning through wellthoughtmedical curriculum that takes into account the changes surroundingintends the profession itself and the expectations of the community with regardto the graduate that it intends to produce. The Kulliyah (faculty) of Medicine,International Islamic University Malaysia, (IIUM) pioneered what it called,Islamic Input Medical Program (IIMP) since its inception in 1995, in its effortto produce a different ‘breed’ of doctors who not only excel in their professionalduty but also portray conduct, (akhlaq) expected of a good Muslim.A good Muslim doctor is expected to portray a highest degree of medicalprofessionalism and demonstrate proper etiquette while dealing with his/herpatients and community. However, inculcating professionalism and properetiquette among medical undergraduates is not an easy matter. Learning thisvalue could be done through a workshop activity whereby students demonstratetheir understanding on these aspects of care through discussion of case studiesgiven to them prior to the scheduled activity. This article describes the approachthat has been implemented over the past two years at this faculty. Keywords: Medical curriculum, professionalism, Islam, Islamic input.Dr. Ariff bin OsmanHead, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive CareCo-coordinator of the Islamic Input in Medical ProgramKulliyah of Medicine, International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM)E-mail: ariff.osman@gmail.comFIMA YearBook 200965
