Workshopand having good conduct, (akhlaq)and develop the following attributessuch as being highly motivated forimprovement <strong>of</strong> personal, pr<strong>of</strong>essional,intellectual and spiritual development;observing proper etiquette <strong>of</strong> dealingwith patients and colleagues and havinggood leadership and managerial skillsFor practical purposes, the IIUMincludes the operational definition (3)<strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism that evolves aroundacquiring four main attributes,summarised as 2E’s and 2C’s. The 2E’sstands for Expert and Ethical whilethe 2C’s represent Communicationand Compassion. Students shouldunderstand that it is their duty todevelop optimal level <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalismby first ensuring that they live up tothe expectation <strong>of</strong> their pr<strong>of</strong>ession asexperts. In carrying out their duties,they should perform them in the mostethical way; be able to communicateappropriately and effectively whiledemonstrating compassion andinterest to help alleviate their patients’problems.Workshop on <strong>Medical</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalismand Proper Physician EtiquetteThe “Workshop on <strong>Medical</strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism and PhysicianEtiquette” is designed as a forumthat facilitates the understanding <strong>of</strong>students <strong>of</strong> their duties as doctors.Learning in small groups, they discuss acase study assigned to them and discussthe issue presented in it. The casestudies represents common realitiesencountered in daily clinical practicethat students would face as doctors,where they are expected to give theirservices in the most pr<strong>of</strong>essional andethical way. Through discussion <strong>of</strong> thecases, they would learn the importance<strong>of</strong> exercising pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism anddemonstrating proper physicianetiquette while dealing with patients.Hopefully, the hands-on experienceand skill obtained from the workshopwould make them better doctors asthey would be more knowledgeable andmotivated to practice pr<strong>of</strong>essionalismand proper etiquette in dealing withtheir patients.The objectives <strong>of</strong> the workshop are toeducate students about the importance<strong>of</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism andphysician etiquette in patient care;to provide hands-on knowledge andskill on medical pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism andphysician etiquette in patient care andto integrate <strong>Islamic</strong> values into clinicalpractice. At the end <strong>of</strong> the workshopeach student should be able to applythe general principles <strong>of</strong> medicalpr<strong>of</strong>essionalism and proper physicianetiquette in providing total patientcare; demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism andproper etiquette <strong>of</strong> a Muslim Physicianwhen dealing with patients andrecognize the various needs <strong>of</strong> patientsand their environment which are prerequisitesfor good clinical practice.Each group is given a Case Study atleast two weeks prior to the workshopscheduled day.
