considered the financial capital of the <strong>Netherlands</strong> given the presence of the Dutch Central Bank,the head offices of ABN AMRO and ING Bank, as well as the head offices of dozens of foreignbanks. Compared with other parts of the <strong>Netherlands</strong>, the tourism sector of the <strong>Amsterdam</strong>metropolitan area is an important pillar of the regional economy. Over 2007, the metropolitanregion attracted 7 million hotel guests (O+S <strong>Amsterdam</strong>, 2008a). Figure 1-9 shows how theemployment by sector in the city of <strong>Amsterdam</strong> has developed over the past 15 years. The mostsalient trends are the rise of employment in the professional financial services sector and thedecline in employment in the industry, transport and wholesale trade sector. Finally, the tenlargest employers in <strong>Amsterdam</strong> are depicted in Table 1-3. Besides government organizationsthere is a strong representation of the educational and financial sectors.
