The Groot-<strong>Amsterdam</strong> region performed better than the national average on a number of key economicindicators over the last decade. Unemployment has declined sharply in the Groot-<strong>Amsterdam</strong>region (as in the rest of the <strong>Netherlands</strong>) due to labor market and social welfare reforms.Nevertheless, unemployment has been structurally higher in the Groot-<strong>Amsterdam</strong> region ascompared to the Dutch average. There are currently 12 provincesand 443 municipalities (figure for 2008, see CBS Statline).27
