DOING BUSINESS INTHE DOMINICAN REPUBLICvention or events centers, cruise companies, leisure, ecologic or <strong>the</strong>me parks,port and tourist <strong>in</strong>frastructure, small and medium sized companies depend<strong>in</strong>g ontourism, <strong>in</strong>frastructure for basic services and complementary activities.c) ProceduresApplications must be filed with <strong>the</strong> Council of Tourism Promotion (CONFOTUR),an organ formed of public and private sector representatives charged with <strong>the</strong>implementation of Law 158-01, and fulfill <strong>the</strong> respective requirements, which<strong>in</strong>clude particularly environmental studies and many o<strong>the</strong>r guarantees of environmentprotection.The Technical Bureau for Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Programm<strong>in</strong>g is a body of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry ofTourism with <strong>the</strong> function to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es and priorities that willguide <strong>the</strong> application of <strong>the</strong> law, and to assist CONFOTUR <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g ofclassification requests and <strong>the</strong> performance of its attributions <strong>in</strong> general, and tomake <strong>the</strong> contacts and offer all <strong>the</strong> necessary <strong>in</strong>formation to <strong>in</strong>vestors.d) BenefitsThe <strong>in</strong>centives granted by Law 158-01 <strong>in</strong>clude tax exemptions for projects anddeductions for <strong>in</strong>vestments.The extent of tax exemptions is very wide, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g100% of <strong>in</strong>come tax, construction charges, purchase of real property andcustom duties for a period of ten years. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, companies and <strong>in</strong>dividualsmay deduct up to 20% from <strong>the</strong>ir taxable <strong>in</strong>come <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> such touristprojects.e) Tourism Promotion FundF<strong>in</strong>ally, Law 158-01 also creates an Official Fund for Tourist Promotion with <strong>the</strong>purpose of grant<strong>in</strong>g a more effective promotion of <strong>the</strong> Dom<strong>in</strong>ican <strong>Republic</strong> astourist dest<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational markets, and of giv<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ancial support to <strong>the</strong>new tourist poles established <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> law.3AGRICULTURE64OVERVIEW AND PERSPECTIVESThe Dom<strong>in</strong>ican <strong>Republic</strong> has large tropical forests and many agricultural areas. Ithas also highlands ascend<strong>in</strong>g to 3,000 meters that are good for grow<strong>in</strong>g a greatvariety of crops.There are no frosts and <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>fall goes from 400 to 4,000 millimetersper year with an average of 1,500 millimeters.The country's territory is distributed as follows: 52% is ma<strong>in</strong>ly forest, 20% is suitablefor livestock, 26% is suitable for arable farm<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 3% is forpreservation.The country is <strong>the</strong> largest Caribbean exporter of agricultural products.The ma<strong>in</strong>agricultural products are rice and beans, and <strong>the</strong> most important agriculturalitems exported are sugar, coffee, cocoa and tobacco. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> 80'so<strong>the</strong>r products like fruits, tubers and o<strong>the</strong>r vegetables are also exported <strong>in</strong> largequantities.
