In IYLMthese products include primarily the following:Agriculture;Fishing and forestry; andMining and quarrying.The secondary sector of an economy includes all those activities concerned with manufacturing finishedgoods. Prominent IYLM secondary economic activities include the following:Food;Beverages and tobacco;Textiles;Clothing and leather goods;Wood;Paper;Publishing and printing;Petroleum products;Chemicals;Rubber and plastic;Metals, metal products;Machinery and equipment;Electrical machinery and apparatus, Radio and TV, instruments, watches and clocks;Transport equipment, Furniture and other manufacturing, Electricity;Water; andConstruction.The tertiary sector of the economy is concerned with providing services. The tertiary sector of IYLMincludes the following:Wholesale and retail trade;Catering and accommodation services;Transport and storage;Communication;Finance and insurance;Business services;44
Community;Social and personal services; andGeneral government.Notably, Chart 9 illustrates that the tertiary sector is the primary contributor in terms of GVA of IYLMwith the secondary and primary sectors contributing significantly less. Such a bias towards the tertiarysector hinders economic growth in an area such as IYLM because it is the primary and secondary sectorsthat should drive the growth of the <strong>local</strong> economy since they are far more labour intensive and have fargreater capacity to stimulate beneficiation. This is not to say that the tertiary sector is not importanthowever it is the primary and particularly the secondary sectors that can grow the economy.45
