Shipping and Ports<br />
VINALINES was established on 1 January 1996 in accordance with the Prime<br />
Minister’s Decision <strong>No</strong>. 250/TTg dated 4 April 1995. To pursue organizational<br />
reform, operational management and commercial functions were transferred<br />
from VINAMARINE to VINALINES. As a result, a number of state-owned<br />
enterprises (SOEs), many of them leading ocean-going and coastal shipping<br />
companies, such as Vietnam Ocean Shipping Company (VOSCO), Vietnam Sea<br />
Transport and Chartering Company (VITRANCHART), Vietnam Shipping<br />
Company (VINASHIP), and Falcon Shipping Company (FALCON), were placed<br />
under VINALINES.<br />
One of the organization’s major functions is to operate five major ports in<br />
Vietnam, namely: Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Danang, Saigon, and Can Tho, and<br />
the respective companies operating in these ports.<br />
Since its inception VINALINES has expanded its business activities in shipping,<br />
port operation and other services to improve cargo-handling capacity and<br />
increase transportation capacity. Together with its member companies,<br />
VINALINES has become a major stockholder in several joint venture and holding<br />
companies in the maritime industry. Following are the major operators and<br />
companies that comprise VINALINES’ business activities:<br />
