Distributed Power Control and Rate Adaptation 243(Jung and Vaidya 2002), is used to overcome the hidden-terminal problemand it is combined with the proposed power control scheme. The proposed MAC protocol uses the novel DPC algorithm to calculatethe transmitter power for every MAC frame, whereas the other protocols(Jung and Vaidya 2002, Gomez et al. 2001) modify the power only for theDATA and ACK frames. Additionally, the algorithm predicts the channelstate for the next transmission, whereas the other protocols use the oldmeasurements to select a power value. Finally, a safety factor is utilizedto adjust the transmission power in the case of delayed feedback. Thus, the proposed power control MAC protocol selects a more suitable transmissionpower for fading channels whereas others do not. Moreover, thetrain of pulses is used for every MAC frame including the RTS and CTS,whereas the protocol in Jung and Vaidya (2002) applies it to DATA framesonly. Consequently, the proposed approach, as explained in the followingsubsection, results in higher channel utilization and energy efficiency.6.5.1 Hidden-Terminal ProblemThe hidden-terminal problem occurs in a wireless network when a thirdnode causes a collision with an ongoing communication between any twonodes. The problem is illustrated in Figure 6.2, where node A transmitsdata to node B. Node F is outside the sensing range of transmitter A, andit will not detect transmission of the DATA frame that is sent from node A.Sensing range of Afor DPC powerTransmissionrange of Afor DPC powerSensing range of Afor MAX powerTransmissionrange of Afor MAX power“new”hiddenterminals’area“Improvement”areaCAGBF“802.11”hiddenterminals’areaCollisionrange of BFIGURE 6.2Hidden-terminal problem in ad hoc networks.
