The deck shall belight-colored, slip resisting, easily cleanable, impervious, durable, <strong>and</strong> drain properly.Rough <strong>and</strong> abrasive surfaces are prohibited. Prohibited deck surfaces include gravel,pea gravel, epoxy gravel, wood, carpeting, <strong>and</strong> vinyl. A sample of the deck surfacematerial shall be submitted, other than broom-finished concrete, <strong>for</strong> approval prior toinstallation.(4) Deck slope <strong>and</strong> drainage. Decks shall have a minimum transverse slope of onequarterinch (¼”) per foot <strong>and</strong> a maximum of one-half inch (½”) per foot away fromthe pool or toward deck drains. The plane of the deck surface shall be uni<strong>for</strong>m, withno steps, curbs, or similar structures, within the minimum required, complying deckarea. Decks shall not retain any st<strong>and</strong>ing water greater than one-eighth inches (⅛”) indepth or greater than one (1) square foot of area <strong>for</strong> a period of time not to exceedtwenty (20) minutes. Deck drainage shall not be incorporated with any pool water orany potable water source. Deck drain grates shall be secured, yet easily removablewith an appropriate tool to facilitate cleaning the drains. Adjacent areas to the deck<strong>and</strong> walkway(s) within the pool enclosure shall be safe <strong>and</strong> well drained.(5) Sun / Tanning Shelves. If approved, sun or tanning shelves shall be constructedentirely outside, but pa rt of , t he i nternal w all o f a pool , w ith no extensions or t heleading edge of the shelf extending be yond the vertical plane of the pool wall. Thenormal operating water depth within the shelf shall be a minimum of four inches (4”)with a ma ximum w ater depth of ten i nches ( 10”). A c omplying de ck s urface s hallcompletely surround the shelf except <strong>for</strong> the edge-to-pool portion of the shelf edge.The di stance f rom t he surface of t he deck to the s urface of t he s helf shall be amaximum of twelve inches (12”). A continuous line of two inch by two inch (2” x2”), dark-colored, slip-resistant tile shall be installed along the entire top edge of theshelf. A continuous line of two inch by two inch (2” x 2”), dark-colored, glazed tileshall be installed along the entire front edge of the shelf. The shelf edge shall have aminimum radius of one inch (1”). A minimum of one (1) inlet from the circulationsystem s hall be c entrally installed <strong>for</strong> every on e hundr ed s quare f eet ( 100 s . f .) ofshelf surface area, or major fraction thereof. The shelf surface shall be self-drainingwith a maximum slope of one foot per twelve feet (1’/12’), <strong>and</strong> shall comply with allother pool s urface r equirements. The s helf a rea must be ins talled at the shallowestportion of the pool. If the shelf is constructed as part of an ingress, such as steps intothe pool , t hen one h<strong>and</strong>rail may e xtend f rom t he pool de ck t o the initial interiorsurface of t he i ngress i nside the poo l <strong>and</strong> a s econd ha ndrail m ay e xtend f rom t hesun/tanning shelf to the bottom step.(6) Coping. A coping block m ade with a bul l nos ed, r aised pr ojection or ot herapproved design, with a minimum one inch (1”) radius, shall be installed along theentire perimeter of the pool except at the entry point <strong>for</strong> zero-depth entry pools. Thecoping shall not retain any water. The coping shall be considered as pool decking.(7) Hose bibs. Hose bibs, with backflow prevention, shall be installed within the poolenclosure. The number <strong>and</strong> spacing of the hose bibs shall be adequate to reach all<strong>Cobb</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Douglas</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public Health<strong>Douglas</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> <strong>and</strong> Regs <strong>for</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Pools</strong>17
